Frequently asked questions

Should you choose thermoplastic or coloured marking?

Our general recommendation is to use thermoplastic marking on high-quality asphalt. Thermoplastic markings last significantly longer than paint markings, making them more advantageous in the long term. Although the initial cost of using thermoplastic is higher, its superior durability (compared to pavement paint) renders it a more cost-effective solution over the years.

In most cases, the paint will last for 2-4 years on good quality asphalt with medium traffic. However, there are some parking lots where the marking has lasted for more than 6 years. The durability of the paint depends mainly on three factors:

  • The traffic density of the parking lot – in busy parking lots, the paint will wear significantly faster than in less busy areas.
  • Quality of asphalt – decaying and poor quality pavement will crumble and the paint will wear off with the asphalt layers.
  • Cleanliness of the surface to be painted – before painting, surfaces must be stripped of any adhesion inhibitors such as sand, dust, clay or loose old markings.

Thermoplastic pavement markings last longer on good quality asphalt than paint markings. In Estonia, there are several high-traffic parking lots where thermoplastic lines have retained their quality for at least 4 years, and remarking is only necessary after 2-3 years. We have seen thermoplastic lines marked over 15 years ago still performing their function.

On older asphalt, the thermoplastic may not last much longer as it degrades and peels away with the asphalt surface. Poor quality asphalt will also leave thermoplastic lines with uneven edges.

If the parking space to be marked is located on the contracting authority’s private land, the approval of the local authority is not required. However, coordination is mandatory if the parking space is located on municipal land. No consent is required to repaint old lines. Although coordination is not compulsory for parking spaces on private land, it is highly recommended that the marking of parking spaces follows the requirements of the Estonian Standards Centre.

It is very important to remove loose dust and dirt before marking the parking lot. Cleaning is necessary to achieve good quality and long-lasting marking.

Marking work can only be carried out on dry ground. In addition, it must take place when the air temperature is above 5°C and the humidity is below 80%. Failing to comply with these conditions may diminish the quality and durability of the marking.
